It was here. For a couple of days, New Zealand’s World Cup – the Web Ellis Trophy – was in Devonport. The trophy, while really belonging to New Zealand but which keeps getting won by pesky foreigners, was on display in the North Shore Rugby Club over the weekend.

However, its presence in Devonport was believed to have occurred in order to ensure the cup is “acclimatised” to the Auckland environment, given it will be back permanently later this year.

So – this trophy thing. Some kind of religious ritual object is it? Does it have healing properties? Or is it potentially dangerous? (I note that the child is protecting the family jewels). All very mysterious to those of us who have yet to have the sports brainwash treatment.

I couldn’t believe how “casual” it all was. So easy to wonder down and have a look. Fab stuff.
