The Speculator Snaps Tornado Cloud

Posted by on May 03, 2011 | 1 Comment

The Devonport Speculator braved considerable powers of suction to ascertain the Albany tornado’s direction, once it was reported to be heading south and possibly in the direction of Devonport. Fleeing to the summit of Mt Victoria as the news came in, The Speculator saw no further evidence of tornadoes, but did take some snaps of the large storm cell responsible for the twister.

The tornado touched down in Albany and then moved south to Birkenhead and Glenfield, briefly touching down again in the Waitemata Harbour, before heading west to Pt Chevalier.

The tornado killed two people, injured 14, lifted roofs, flipped cars, uplifted trees and left a 5km trail of debris about 3:15pm.

Dramatic cloud formations… Love the weather patterns, but very sad about the loss of life. Thoughts are with family and friends of the lost and loved one, GT
