It is no exaggeration to say the young Ngataringa tennis squad have so far given the elite Chelsea Cup competition a real shake-up.

Not expected to win a single match by some early pundits, the team captained by 16 year old Devonport lad, Ben Davies, have won two on the trot, including a four games to two hiding of the mighty Campbells Bay club last Friday night.

Team manager Richard Loseby, also President of Ngataringa, is thrilled with their success. “We had 40+ people down at the club on the first home game against Milford, and the team played strongly to take two points in that encounter. The following week they went one better and totally cleaned up against Beachhaven and now Campbells Bay, who boast some of the best (including Davis Cup) players in the country.”

While it is still early days, the whisper of a semi-final spot is starting to grow louder. The big crunch match will be a home game this Friday 25th against Becroft. So if you feel like ending the week with something different, get down there from 6pm and make it an evening of top-level tennis at this wonderfully picturesque and friendly club, in Stanley Bay Park, Stanley Bay. It’s probably the oldest tennis club on the shore and certainly the best in terms of location, just meters from the waterfront. BYO beer or wine and make it a picnic for the family. There is a great kid’s playground beside the courts. Members and non-members all welcome, as are all enquiries regarding joining the club either for social or competitive tennis.
