Even during war, a sailor’s life is not all action and battles. While at sea, sailors had long periods of time with nothing much to do. They became very good at finding things to do to pass the time, or while the time away.
Many sailors learnt how to do folk art and handicrafts using materials they had available, such as shell casings and buttons.
Using modern resin moulding techniques, cast a replica of a Navy Dress Uniform Button and turn it into a cool piece of folk art. An interesting mix of science & art, you can make your button into a necklace, badge, decoration for your pencil case, or anything you want: you are only limited by your imagination!
