Two local lads with a head for numbers have been chosen to become New Zealand’s ambassadors for the upcoming World Maths Day on March 1.

Auckland is this year’s host city, and previous winners Evan and Travis Manning have been selected to help promote the event throughout New Zealand.

Evan, (age 7), won the All Ages NZ World Maths Day Finals last year for which he won a trophy and medal, while Travis (age 9) came 2nd in NZ on World Maths Day itself for which he also won a medal.

Part of their role as ambassadors is to spread the word about World Maths Day which they will be doing this week by putting up posters, talking to other schools and arranging a launch for Tuesday 1st March with a team of helpers from their school.

Auckland is the host city for WMD this year which now also includes World Spelling Day.  This year, children have the opportunity to fund-raise  with 50% going to their School and 50% to Unicef.

Students play at home on their PC and at school against other students around the world in live games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play up to 100 games, earning points for the World Maths Day Mathometer.

Last year, more than two million students from 235 countries combined to correctly answer 479,732,631 World Maths Day questions.
