On Friday 9 September during the morning low tide, about 1,500 local school-age children on the Devonport peninsula will head out to Takapuna Beach, Narrow Neck Beach, Cheltenham Beach, Torpedo Bay, Devonport Beach and Windsor Reserve, Stanley Bay Beach, Ngataringa Bay and Shoal Bay, launching an ambitious beach clean up in preparation to the Rugby World Cup!

The project was sparked by an idea of NS Rugby Club member Simon Gundry during a community network meeting in August. Suggesting that everyone in the community could help get ready for visitors and tourists, Gundry thought a big beach clean-up was the perfect contribution local children could make.

The project has since then driven by the Devonport Peninsula Trust as a community development project. The trust’s Devonport Community Coordinator brought the idea to the local schools who unanimously embraced the idea. Primary schools from Hauraki to Belmont, Bayswater, Devonport, Stanley Bay and Cheltenham, as well as Belmont Intermediate School each committed large numbers of children to help clean the local beach closest to them of inorganic debris. The Wilson School joined in as well but preferred an earlier date. 18 children enjoyed cleaning the Southern end of Takapuna beach on Friday 26 August.

Auckland Council’s Parks and Recreation Department is lending strong organizational support, supplying gloves for all children and orchestrating the rubbish pick up at the end of the big day.

The Sir Peter Blake Trust and Council’s Education for Sustainability Team offered pre- and post-clean up workshops to all the schools, preparing children for the day as well as picking up where the event leaves off with questions on how to address the many causes of marine debris.

Meanwhile, the Royal Navy has also offered a hand, using a small helicopter to take photographs of the children in action, inevitably organised by the indomitable Maire Vieth, Devonport’s Uber Organiser.
