Auckland mayor Len Brown was at BIS this week, to present the school an award for its record levels of children who bike and walk to school.

Some 89% of BIS kids use their feet or their bike to get to school; the highest level anywhere in the country.

Prior to the presentation ceremony, Brown spent morning tea hanging with the kids and regaling them with stories of trains coming to Takapuna and the North Shore in the not so distant future. Brown was well received by the kids, skinning a number of high fives and handshakes.

At the school assembly principal Justin Somerville rode a tandem up the school hall aisle with Mayor Brown on the back; all part of the effort by the council to promote Auckland’s Bike Week. They joined councillors Mike Cohen and Chris Darby on stage.

Mr Brown then gave a speech about the benefits of biking to school and congratulated BIS on its performance, presenting principal Somerville with a mounted golden bike bell.

After the speech, Brown and Somerville joined all the BIS students who had biked to school on their tandem for a spontaneous bike around the school basketball courts.
