Devonport will host its own international rugby showdown during the World Cup; the defence forces of 12 different countries are competing to win the International Defence Rugby Cup.
From 1-14 Oct, the Australian Defence Force will host pool and quarter finals in Sydney for the 12 competing nations which are :
Australian Defence Force
New Zealand Defence Force
Royal Air Force
South African Defence
Papua New Guineas Defence
+ 2 teams to be confirmed
On completion of the initial games the semi finalists will travel to New Zealand by Royal Australian Air Force flight for the period 14-24 Oct where they will be accommodated on the Naval Base in Devonport.
On arrival in the Country they will receive an official welcome at the Navy Marae, attend a buffet reception and commence the preparation for their semi final matches.
The semi finals will be played on Tuesday 18 October and hosted by North shore RFC with the first semi final kicking off at 1330 and the second one at 1600 with an after match function at the clubhouse.
The final will be played on Saturday 22 Oct at Ponsonby Rugby Club.
The Speculator suspects Tuesday the 18th could be a fairly uproarious night in Devonport. At least they won’t have to bring in the Army.
