Ex-Councillor Criticises Local Board For “Deathly Silence”

Ex Takapuna Community Board member Fay Freeman last night criticised the newly elected Devonport Takapuna Local Board for its “deathly silence” on recent important issues affecting the area for which it has responsibility.

During the public forum session on the Board meeting held in Takapuna last night, Ms Freeman said she was disappointed that the Board had not taken a more proactive approach on addressing the considerable damage done to the local coastline by the recent storms. She said it was important that local residents be updated as to what was planned to repair the damage.

Ms Freeman also referred to the recent traffic debacle on Lake Rd as another example of an important issue on which the new Board had had nothing to say.

Chairman Chris Darby accepted that the Board could have done more to keep ratepayers informed, and committed to ensuring the Board’s external communications via the media and other channels would be improved.

I’m sorry to say there’s some truth to Ms Freeman’s comment because, since the election, the new board has become very remote. This is partly due to the fact that, even though there are some hard working representatives, limited agendas means they haven’t been given the opportunity for meaningful input…..Collating items is the chairman’s responsibility, and he really needs to remember that Devonport is watching!

One option to keep us informed would be to hold a meeting or two in Devonport and at a time that suits people who actually work for a living …

    Just saying.

I guess we can believe we are lucky that we just got a very small storm compared to what Australia received, there are a huge amount of people who have lost homes – who in Devonport/Takapuna lost theirs – as for the roads I guess if we all do our bit and wait another hour or so on our journey the road which looks like it will be concrete (I hope) if so then it will not have to be dug up or resealed
