Twelve teams drawn from the defence forces representing nine nations competed for the title of World Champions of the International Defence Rugby Cup and the opportunity to play in Auckland in the final days of the Rugby World Cup. The two semi-finals were played at North Shore Rugby Club last week.

The first semi-final was played between England and Tonga, with the English squeezing home in the final minutes. The second was played between Australia and Samoa, with the Australians triumphing.

However, a massive blue cloud shedding a tsunami of rain was seen to advance from the west across Mt Victoria, and deciding discretion was the better part of valour, The Speculator fled to the car, just in the nick of time.

The final was played at the Ponsonby Rugby Club, with the English coming out on top.
