For the second year in a row, Devonport’s Rotary Club, the Devonport Peninsula Trust and Cheapskates Takapuna are putting on a local skate competition at Ngataringa Skate Park. This summer’s event happens on Saturday 10 December, from noon to 3 pm.

This is a great youth and family event that celebrates the local skateboarding culture. It offers local skateboarders an outlet for their talent, as well as an opportunity to watch other skaters and be inspired by the many skate boarding tricks on display.

The event honors the late Scotty Brewer, a local teenager who was a keen skate boarder and was involved in the development of the skate park. Scotty died of an undiagnosed heart condition suddenly in 1999.

Cheapskates Takapuna, who just ran a regional competition in Devonport a couple of weeks ago, are supplying the judges for the Under 16 and Open Competitions. Registration starts at 11 am. Last year, around 100 skates participated in the event.

Devonport Rotary is funding the event as well as donating volunteers to run it. The day is organized by the Devonport Peninsula Trust and its Community Coordinator, Maire Vieth. There will be a sausage sizzle, soft drink sale, and First Aiders will be on hand. The event is alcohol free.
