Devonport’s Stanley Bay Primary school hosted a visit from the Mathletics co-ordinator this week.

Pupil Evan Manning was presented with his four medals for coming first in NZ in maths and third in the world.

He was then awarded first in NZ in spelling and eighth in the world.

Evan, (age 8), won the All Ages NZ World Maths Day Finals last year for which he secured a trophy and medal, while older brother Travis (age 10) came 2nd in NZ on World Maths Day itself for which he also won a medal.

Stanley Bay School Principal Glen Vinton said Evan had been entered into the Milky Way Galaxy Finals Competition, but on seeing his results, the participating alien civilisations had withdrawn. This included the mathematics specialist species from the Planet Zurgle known as the Xertlwwarts, who last year calculated pi to 40 trillion places.
