North Shore United will host Birkenhead United on Monday the 6th of June at Allen Hill Stadium in an all Shore ASB Chatham Cup clash.

‘We are anticipating a large local crowd to support the boys, and we are inviting all past and present players to come down with their families and enjoy watching some quality football’, says Chairman Simon Lampen.

North Shore holds the illustrious position in The Chatham Cup history as having appeared in the final a record twelve times; six times winners and six times runners up.

This year 1st Team Coach Dave Coshan and Manager Ian Gray have put together a very strong squad.

NSU comfortably won their first round game against Hamilton West 4-0 to book a place in the second round.

‘The boys have been playing some attractive football and everything clicked in the second half of the Hamilton game’, says Coach Dave Coshan.

Shore is targeting the cup game for the return of their star striker ex-international & World Club Cup player Grant Young who has been injured for the past couple of weeks.

‘Grant’s experience on the big stage in competitions like the Club World Cup and International Football will be a great calming influence for the younger members of the squad’, says team manager Ian Gray. ‘His presence is invaluable’.

The Chatham Cup has been played for annually since 1923 with the exception of 1937 and 1941–44. The cup itself was donated in 1922 by the crew of HMS Chatham as a token of appreciation for the hospitality they had encountered on a visit to New Zealand. The actual trophy is modeled on the FA Cup.

The game will hold additional significance, as both teams will also be playing for the Sid Derby cup. Sid was a life member of NSU and a member of Birkenhead United when he died. The cup was donated by Sid’s family in his memory and is to be played for when the two teams meet. Not a common occurrence these days as the teams play in different divisions.
