The Speculator has learned that a number of Devonport residents have received calls from malcontents pretending to be from Microsoft, who claim one’s PC has contracted a virus.
The caller – often in a heavy Indian accent – then instructs the victim to visit a certain website where they are told to download various things onto their PC, give their credit card number etc.
THIS IS A DANGEROUS HOAX, honest burghers of Devonport.
Many years ago The Speculator had an Auntie who was was also a JP in the challenging environment of Glen Innes. She would occasionally receive rude calls from dissatisfied and abusive locals.
Her solution was to keep a whistle by the phone, which, when enthusiastically blown into the mouthpiece, would result in the caller’s skull resonating at the whistle’s unpleasant and shrill frequency for some minutes after my Aunt had hung up. She claimed it was extraordinarily effective.
The Speculator would urge its readers to adopt a similar strategy.
