Devonport band The Naked and Famous have rounded out a good year with six nominations at the 2011 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.
At tonight’s announcement, the band’s debut album Passive Me Aggressive You led the charge with nominations for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Alternative Album and the People’s Choice Award.
Also in the running – with five nominations each – are Ladi6 and Brooke Fraser. David Dallas, Tiki Taane, Six60 and Avalanche City received three finalist spots each.
The Naked and Famous and Ladi6 are also nominated for the NZ On Air Best Music Video award – The Naked and Famous for Punching In A Dream, directed by Special Problems, and Ladi6 for her hit single Like Water, directed by Faye McNeil. Special Problems’ video of Zowie’s single Broken Machine is also nominated.
The Naked and Famous also featured strongly in the Technical Awards, which were announced tonight, with band members Thom Powers and Aaron Short taking home the MAINZ Best Engineer Award, with Olly Harmer, and the MAINZ Best Producer Award.
Recognition at the VNZMAs closes off a successful 12 months for the five-piece.
A number of their songs have been picked up on American TV shows including Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl, they won last year’s Silver Scroll Award for the single Young Blood and were nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll in December 2010. Recently, the band has been touring America and Europe.
The VNZMA winners will be named at Auckland’s Vector Arena on November 3.
Brooke Fraser, Ladi6 and The Naked and Famous will all return home from international tours to perform at the ceremony, along with Six60, Tiki Taane and Avalanche City.
