Volunteer Firemen Put It Out

Posted by on Dec 05, 2010 | 2 Comments

The weather really turned it on for Devonport Volunteer Firefighters’ open day at the fire station on Lake Road on Saturday morning as residents and visitors turned out to find out all about this valuable community service and to try their hand at putting out a fire, crawling out of a smoke-filled room and sitting at the controls of one of the seven fire engines on display.

The opportunity to get a bit damp while practising their extinguishing skills proved irresistible to some of the younger visitors under the hot sun. Devonport has the country’s oldest volunteer fire service, now in its 125th year, and the open day was a very successful celebration of  its key role in community health and safety.

Volunteers from other fire stations also attended to support their colleagues, as did members of Auckland’s volunteer fire police service, who maintain crowd control and security at sites of fires and other incidents so the firefighters can concentrate on the key job.
