The Speculator’s Exclusive Q and A with Gin Wigmore

Posted by on Aug 10, 2010 | 4 Comments

April 9, 2005. The Speculator recalls a concert in Windsor Reserve – “Sounds of Devonport.” On a casual and sunny Saturday, who should appear but Chris Thompson – of Manfred Mann fame – to sing their huge hit from the 70s – “Blinded by the Light.”

The concert also marked the first performance of the talented but short-lived Electric Confectionaires.

At the same exceptional concert, a shy, self conscious young woman performed a moving song about her late father, accompanied by Rikki Morris. The song and her voice – as noted by The Flagstaff at the time –  mesmerised the small but enthusiastic audience.

As is now well known, the song  – “Hallelujah” – went on to win a prestigious international song competition, and the young singer – Gin Wigmore – has gone on to top the singles and album charts in New Zealand.

The Speculator recently approached Gin’s management with a request for Gin to complete a casual questionnaire on Life, The Universe and Everything. Gin very decently obliged. Her answers are below.

Since the interview, Gin has departed for the US.

1. Where are you right now?
A little town called Devonport on the north shore of Auckland, NZ.

2. What are you reading at the moment?
Trashy magazines as per usual.

3. What is your favourite item of clothing?
My cropped forest green army jacket.

4. What is your most valued possession?
I have 3 things. My friends, family and my sense of humour.

5. Outside of your family, how long have you known your oldest friend?
My best friend I have known for 10 years.

6. When and where were you the happiest?
Well that all changes as past happy times can fade and get tainted. So I would have to honestly say that just being in the present right here and now is my happiest time.

Duke gets the bad news

7. When did you last say “I love you” and to whom?
I know this is sad, but it was to my dog Duke last week when he refused to come out from under the bed as I was heading away on tour again!

8. Have you ever said “I love you” and not meant it?
Oh yeah, the last stage of relationships I’m in, when we both know it’s not going to last but you have said “I love you” to each other a thousand times already that it just becomes habit rather than actually feeling it anymore. Happens all the time sadly enough!

9. What single thing in life is most over-rated?
Spa baths being relaxing. How can fizzing loud jets splashing chlorine water everywhere be relaxing?!

10. Do you believe in life after death?
I have to, otherwise I would never sleep at night.

11. Can you recite a line of poetry?
“She sells sea shells on the sea shore”

12. When did you last tell a lie and why?
Yesterday. To get out of paying a cancellation fee for an eyebrow wax appointment that I just couldn’t get to in time, because I was busy buying trying on cool clothes to wear for a show that night.

13. What did you last apologise to someone for?
My friend for pulling out of an all nighter in Blenheim after the Marlborough Food and Wine Festival show I played at.

14. What is the closest you have ever come to dying?
Being in the surf at Piha when I got dragged out in a rip on sunset. I was just swimming and a surfer pulled me up on his board and paddled me into the shallows. Oh god that was a frightening day.

"Why don't they just talk properly?" A question asked by most parents.

"Why can't they just talk properly?" A very good question.

15. Which single person do you most despise?
The teletubbies. Why can’t they just talk properly. My kids will never watch those stupid things.

16. What is your most unappealing habit or characteristic?
I bite my nails and spit out the nails wherever I am. Gross I know, but I just can’t help it!

17. What is the characteristic you find most unappealing in other people?
People that sneeze loudly or cough without putting their hand over their mouth.

18. Which single thing would most improve your life (apart from more time)?
A really cool sun-soaked boutique miner’s cottage (with a helicopter, infinity pool and hammocks on site) in Portugal, France, Italy, Cuba, Waiheke Island, Sydney, Los Angeles, NYC and the Yasawa Islands Fiji.

19. How would you like to be remembered?
As a great musician and person.

…..and finally…….

Tell us three unusual things about yourself, or that have happened to you, but of which only ONE is true.

a. I have 9 tattoos
b. My front tooth is fake
c. I have a bus license
