FOR UPDATES, PAGE DOWN TO THE BOTTOM.

The Devonport Speculator is proud to announce its very first fund-raising venture!!

Between September 24th and December 24th, we are asking Devonportions to put their hands in their pockets and sponsor their fellow “Devon (now on smaller) portions” as they battle to lose the extra kilos all that winter comfort eating has piled on, and help raise money for a good cause at the same time.

The idea is simple – the SpecuSlimmers, as they will henceforth be known, will raise money by being sponsored for every pound or kilo they lose. They set their own target (if they want to) or just take it one kilo at a time.

The cause is a very special one. Speculady (who is aiming to lose 10 kilos) has a sister teaching law at the university in Banjul, Gambia. Resources are very scarce, so we are aiming to raise enough money to pay for one student’s first year tuition fees for their law degree: $NZ2000.

This is an amazing opportunity to really change someone’s life. Any excess money will be donated to local Devonport charities. Details of the scheme’s administration will be available on request.

Your job is one (or both) of two things: Join the sponsored slim and give yourself a really good motive to lose that weight before summer. Or you can sponsor someone else to do it.

You can join the slim at any time between 24 Sept and 24 December so if you’re just off on holiday you can start when you get back.

The Speculator will run a blog, advice, information exchange and updates for all participants. Your privacy will be completely respected so you may be assured that the Speculator will never use your personal information, photograph, name or any other identifying feature unless you explicitly agree.

So come on Devo – let’s turn Pounds into Dollars and help someone change their life. You’ll feel happier, fitter and slimmer, and have a lot of fun while you do it! Sign up today at info@speculator.co.nz. Thank you.

UPDATE 1:

The Speculator’s fundraising campaign – Turning Pounds Into Dollars – Update 1

The Speculator’s campaign to raise the tuition fees for a Gambian law student to study at the University in Banjul is progressing well, with kilos being shed left, right and centre, and sponsorship money slowly but surely building up. However, we would love to have more slimmers to join us and more sponsors, so if you would like to get rid of some dollars (by sponsoring us) or some pounds (by losing weight and being sponsored to do so), please contact info@speculator.co.nz and we will give you further information about this campaign and how to get involved. This is a fantastic chance to really change the life of an individual who would otherwise not get the opportunity, so please consider helping us. The co-ordinator of our campaign in the Gambia has had an application from a suitable student who can begin his studies in December, so our dream is already becoming a reality! Thank you for all your support and sponsorship so far, and in advance for what is to come!

Yay! 3 kilos! It’s taken me 6 weeks which is a good average I think – I’m pretty proud of myself anyway! How are we all doing? xx

We’re in week 3 now, but very happy to welcome new members all the way up to December. There’s a lot of gorgeous summer fruit and veges appearing in the shops now which is making it just a little bit easier to find yummy snacks that are healthy too! So keep going Specuslimmers, we are getting nearer to our fundraising goal every day 🙂 xx

Week 2! Healthy food magazine has a 12 week weight loss plan in this month’s edition – very helpful to anyone wanting to get slim in the run-up to Christmas

Hi Everyone – Chocoholic reporting in !
I am not even going anywhere near the scales – have been to Wellington for 3 days and amongst other things have had two curries, croissants, coffee and cakes and a posh afternoon tea in a tea room ! Back on track today and will weigh myself next Friday.
I’m sure everyone else has had a better week than me 🙂
    XX

Campaign going well, thanks so much to all the people who’ve sponsored me so far! I am working hard to eat lots of healthy food and get fit again after unfortunate double-rib-breaking accident earlier this year which left me immobile and prone to chocolate binges….! Great to be getting emails from all you SpecuSlimmers out there – don’t forget it’s not too late to join if you have any friends who are interested x

Woof woof – I think so far I am the only canine on the slimming programme. I am aiming to drop 3kg to get to my target weight of 6kg. Looking forward to being able to frolic on the beach and chase all the boy dogs without getting puffed out – but am very hungry after meals. 50g of Lite doggy biks for breakfast just isn’t enough – and there are so few pieces of chicken in my chicken casserole but I am determined to do it. However I do not have any sponsors – will anyone please sponsor me ??? Wag wag xx

  7. Chocoholic says:

Hi Everyone, Looking forward to dropping a few kgs ( 5 to be precise ) and raising $$ for a very good cause. Will I be able to cut down on my chocolate intake ?? Time will tell….

  8. Speculady says:

Good luck to all SpecuSlimmers as we embark on our journey! Remember you can join us at anytime. Today’s top tip – weigh in: write it down, take a photo of the scales if you like, dig out a ‘before’ picture and begin to visualise yourself as fitter and healthier. On your marks, get set, GO! x

  9. Jo says:

Greetings from the UK, where I’m trying to lose a few pounds so I look less podgy on the beach in Gambia at Christmas time. (3lb lost so far! In 8 days!)
I’m looking forward to finding about the law school in Banjul and how our money will be spent (in between drinking cocktails on the beach of course….)

Good luck ladies! Jo in Norwich UK.
