Police divers have found the body of a 17-year-old boy who went missing after diving off a cliff into a lake on Auckland’s North Shore yesterday.

Police said divers found the body of Raphael Alualu of Mt Roskill at 10.30am in the quarry lake, next to Lake Pupuke.

A group of teenagers were jumping from the quarry lake in Shea Terrace, Takapuna, when one teenager failed to surface.

Emergency services are at the scene, including police and firefighters who abseiled down the cliff where the children were jumping.

A teenager was taken by ambulance to hospital on a stretcher.

The teenager’s friend, Alice Le Marquand, 15, said her mate was conscious but had hurt her back.

Le Marquand said kids regularly jump off the cliffs by the North Shore Squash and Racquets Club and do flips into the lake directly below.

Bystanders Caleb Goode and Adam Ellington said they were in the car and saw people swimming in the lake.

They soon realised someone had gone under and not surfaced.

The quarry lakes have been a popular cooling off spot for North Shore teens for years but safety concerns have been raised in the past.
