Navy To Hold Security Exercise

On Thursday, 21 October 2010 the Royal New Zealand Navy will be holding its annual security exercise at the Devonport Naval Base. The exercise will commence at 8:00am and will be completed by 4:30pm.

Essentially the exercise focuses on security of the Naval Base. To test this, there will be increased surveillance, control of access, and scrutiny of all materials being brought into Defence Areas. It is a scenario based exercise and all activities will be on defence land. At times you may witness defence personnel acting as protesters or acting suspiciously around the perimeter fence and entrance areas to the base – this is to test our organisation and is part of the exercise.

The impact on the Devonport community will be minimal however there may be slightly more traffic congestion around the main gate on Queens Parade and the transport gate on Patuone Place. This will be due to the vehicles being inspected on entry to the Naval Base.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any further inquiries please contact Lieutenant Sarah Campbell, Senior Media Adviser – Navy on 445 5002 or 021 2440638
