The navy’s in house surgery and in-patient capability located at the hospital in Calliope Rd is set to close in January 2011, with between 20-30 job losses estimated.

Most of the civilian staff employed in these areas of the hospital will be made redundant on or before the 16th January of next year.

In a statement, the navy said “Over the last two years, the NZDF has been evaluating how it can improve efficiency and cost effectiveness, and increase its focus on military operational outputs. More recently, the current economic climate and Government directions for making savings in public expenditure require the NZDF to critically review and make changes where these are appropriate.”

The outpatient services at Navy will remain essentially the same with medical clinics, physiotherapy and vaccinations continuing to be available. “It’s only surgical and ward facilities that will in future be undertaken externally” the statement said.
