Wed 8th September at 10 a m Harmony Hall

4 Wynyard St Devonport

Subject: The History of NZ Department Stores.

Speaker: Helen Laurenson, author of Going Up, Going Down: The Rise and Fall of the Department Store.

Her book is described as a lively account, reflecting NZ’s distinctive and sometimes quirky history, and serves as a reminder of the role NZ department stores played as cultural icons until their demise after the success of the suburban shopping mall.

With interesting photographs and presentation, Anthropology Professor Veronica Strang provided instances of the universally cultural importance of water, which ranged from pagan to modern times, and were equally wide geographically.

Mike Cohen, Chairman of Devonport Community Board spoke briefly and answered questions about aspects of the super city structure.

Dear members,

We welcome back from her travels our treasurer, Maureen, and say thank you to Paul and Rodney for their help in her absence.

The trading table run by Colleen and her helpers made over $90 at the last meeting, which covered our rent for the hall, and many thanks go to them.  We really do need your $2 each time for the monthly meeting, to cover tea/coffee etc, and to enable us to keep our low $10 annual subscription. Our marvellous morning tea team does a great job – many thanks to them also.

Kind regards to all members and especially new ones.  We hope you will find U3A a good place to spend your time

Ann Hargreaves. President
