A new gallery and working studio has just opened in town, and features the work of Nikki Bath and Judi Bagust.

Nikki Bath:

“My motivation for creating art is to bring life to the observer, reach beyond the physical to the heart and soul and evoke a reaction at a deeper level of the spirit.

Having enjoyed a variety of creative expressions ranging from tailoring to bronze casting, catering to oils and watercolours, screen printing to sculpture, all different expressions of colour, texture and form, in 1995 I decided to develop these skills further by taking a degree in ceramics.

A result of this was seeing my work as a centrepiece at the “Feat of Clay” exhibition in 2001 at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I am also pleased that many subsequent pieces have found their places in creative homes around the world.

Art is a major part of my life – from my watercolours, ceramics and sculptures, to everything in between, I love it.”

Judi Bagust:

“I have been painting on and off since the birth of my first child (1975). I joined the Wellington Art Society in 1975 and painted and exhibited with them. Painting realism in Oils, I drew my inspiration from the land and seascapes in New Zealand.

A few years of using acrylic and painting in a more abstract style, I have predicted mark making, layers and washes and more recently returned to Oils.

I am moved by the works of Rothko whose colour fields are rich with emotion. I deeply admire and am influenced by the works of Hotere, McCahon, Gimblett and John Parker.

I consider myself fortunate to be in a group, painting under Anton Chapman whose work continues to influence and inspire.”
