Art Strikes Back!

ScreenHunter_32 Nov. 20 11.28There is more art by the sea at Art By The Sea this morning; in the form of a carefully crafted tag on the emergency boarding covering the smashed window.

The tag, featuring a well-rendered image of a car, and the stencilled words “What do you do with a drunken sailor earl-eye in the morning” has obviously taken some considerable time and not a little skill to create.

Moreover, a convenient space has been left under the question for thoughtful residents to suggest an answer to a question that has been posted literally for centuries. The Speculator suggests anyone considering responding should first gauge owner of the gallery Mike Geers’ likely response.

The Devonport rumour mill be working over time.

Brillant!..and it does go to show that Devo has always had it’s eccentric/witty artist types since day dot, we are famous for it infact! 🙂

Very appropriate I must say! It’ll be interesting to read other people’s comments on the matter. I’m sure the “drunken sailor” in question will be undergoing a court martial, and I would like to see the Navy be responsible for it’s actions for once!

Chill, Dr Speck, I entirely agree there’s some great stuff inside the galleries too (and indeed over at Fort Takapuna recently) but as wry responses to adversity go, ‘The Drunken Sailor’ was particularly, dare I say, smashing… The question is, will we get a similarly intelligent response from the Navy? If they can’t be stirred, perhaps they should be shaken…

how very, very appropriate – I agree with Bond, an extremely witty response to what was (no doubt) an extremely stressful situation for Mike and Linda at ABTS at the time. Good luck to you both!

Brilliant! One of the best pieces of art to be produced in Devo for some time: funny, intelligent, ironic, and with both historic and contemporary relevance. This is why Art by the Sea is one of the country’s leading galleries.

Mr Bond: with the greatest respect to your artistic sense and your oft-used license to kill, could The Speculator gently suggest you take a look INSIDE some of Devonport’s galleries. While I agree this work is of some merit, there are some excellent works inside both ABTS and other Devonport galleries – Ed (who wears glasses)
