For young Christian Scott, his last day at kindy on his fifth birthday couldn’t have got much better.

Clad in his brand new All Black shirt and packing  his last ever kindy lunch, the young lad could scarcely believe it when he looked out the window of his Mum’s car to see a bunch of guys who looked suspiciously like All Blacks milling around the North Shore rugby ground on Vauxhall Rd.

Christian’s mum Gill, a huge All Blacks fan, couldn’t resist the opportunity. Taking her young boy – effervescent with excitement – across the road, she approached a chap who looked an awful lot like the one of the stars of the AB’s  recent games against Australia and South Africa Conrad Smith, and asked if he would mind being in a photo with Christian.

As always, the All Black was more than obliging, and shortly thereafter Christian found himself surrounded by Richie McCaw, Smith and Kevin Mealamu. While Christian insisted he had also spotted Dan Carter, his mum was not so sure, saying “Oh, if he had been there I would have noticed.”

The All Blacks were in town to do some filming for an ad for Mastercard, which The Speculator can reveal involved Mr McCaw chucking a gumboot.

Asked what he thought about Conrad’s match-up against Irish great Brian O’Driscoll, Christian replied “I think he needs to keep his gaps tight to prevent that wily Irishman from commanding too much space. With a bit of luck, he’ll come out on top and maybe his Mum will buy him a muffin, like mine does when I play good.”
